FLAGS 4 FREEDOM -- 2009 

Merriam, Kansas and Shawnee, Kansas

June 27th through July 5th


An All-American Community Celebration ...

Over 3,000 American flags on display in Downtown Merriam and along Johnson Dr. and Nieman in Shawnee.


2009 Event Schedule

All Special Events at the Merriam Marketplace, 5740 Merriam Drive

                 (west of I-35 on Johnson Dr., then north on Merriam Dr.)


Saturday, June 27

    6:00 a.m. -- Flag displays set-up.

               (Want to help?  Just come to the Marketplace.)

    7:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. -- Farmers' Market

    9:30 a.m. -- Opening Ceremony featuring: 

             Marine Corps League, Detachment 1025

             Bugles Across America


Closing TAPS performance at 7:00 p.m. each evening

   featuring instrumentalists from Bugles Across America


FREE concerts -- Bring your own chairs!  (Stormy weather?  Canceled concert?  Call 913-322-5550)

          7:00 p.m. --Tuesday, June 30 -- Ned Scott's Good Sam Club -- country, rock, blues 

           

          6:30 p.m. -- Wednesday, July 1 --   Toe Jam -- acoustic rock

                      A part of "Music in the Marketplace", provided each week by Merriam Parks & Rec 

           

          7:00 p.m. -- Thursday, July 2 --  Sunflower Brass Choir -- "mostly" patriotic music

        

          7:00 p.m. -- Friday, July 3 --  51% Blues Band -- a red, white and blues jam


Saturday, July 4 

       7:00 a.m. through 11:00 a.m. -- Merriam Marketplace Farmers' Market            

 

       1:00 p.m. -- Concessions

            Bill Males' Red Truck Novelties

              Shawnee's Aunt Jean's Ice Cream

 

    1:30 p.m. -- Patriotic Program and Concert featuring: 

 

               Mayor Ken Sissom, Merriam

               Councilmember Neal Sawyer, Shawnee

               Marine Corps League, Detachment 1025

               Bugles Across America

               Kansas City Pipes and Drums

               Kansas Army National Guard 35th Infantry Division Band, Olathe, KS

               Of Thee We Sing (2:00 p.m.) ... join citizens across the nation in singing the National Anthem
 

Sunday, July 5 at 6:00 a.m. -- Volunteers will take down and store flags from streets

              (Want to help?  Meet at the Marketplace.)


Monday, July 6 at 6:00 a.m. -- Volunteers will take down and store flags from display fields

              (Want to help?  Meet at the Marketplace.)
