FLAGS 4 FREEDOM -- 2009

Merriam, Kansas and Shawnee, Kansas

June 27th through July 5th

An All-American Community Celebration and Field of Honor ...

Over 3,000 American flags will be on display in Downtown Merriam and along Johnson Dr. and Nieman in Shawnee.

Volunteers needed to help:

Flag sorting at Merriam Feed & Seed, Merriam Dr.  Saturday, June 6,  9:00 - noon

Mission accomplished!  Flags are "at the ready" -- sorted and loaded into a trailer, just waiting for Sat., 6/27.

Mark areas for flag placement -- Friday, June 26,  7:00 a.m. (changed to this earlier time to "beat the heat")

Streets and fields are marked and awaiting flags.

Haul and set-up flags; meet at Merriam Marketplace -- Saturday, June 27, 6:00 a.m.

Many volunteers joined together to install flags -- at the Merriam Marketplace, at the IBF Community Center, along Johnson Drive (from the railroad tracks to Switzer), and along Merriam Drive (from Antioch to Shawnee Mission Parkway) are full of fluttering red, white, and blue.

Security -- all night each night of the display

Set up of chairs for patriotic program and concert -- Saturday, July 4, 1:00 p.m.

What a great program -- lots of wonderful music!

Take down, haul, and store flags from streets; meet at Merriam Marketplace -- Sunday, July 5, 6:00 a.m.

A small, but mighty group of volunteers took down flags until about 8:30 or 9:00 -- until rain drops halted our progress.

Take down, haul, and store flags from fields; meet at Merriam Marketplace -- Monday, July 6, 6:00 a.m.

This was a first -- we had a great turnout of volunteers at 6:00, but with the cool temperature and the heavy dew, the flags and poles were WAY too wet to take down. (No mildew for our flags, please.) We disbanded until 10:00; those who were able to return worked until all the flags were taken down, bundled, and stored at Merriam Feed & Seed.  Well Done!

Consider including individuals, families, older youth groups, neighborhoods, churches,

service organizations ...  It's a great way to meet and work with your neighbors!
